Join us on to hear a presentation on the broader topic of structural engineering in relation to geometrically complex projects such as the pavilions at Millennium Park and a few other projects by Rockey Structures, LLC. Christopher Rockey is both a licensed structural engineer and architect, and an assistant professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Join us to hear a presentation on the Ledge at Skydeck by Halcrow Yolles. Cantilevered 1,353 ft above the ground, this project uses a nearly invisible structural support system that allows observers to have thrilling views down the face of Willis Tower. This project received both the 2010 Excellence in Structural Engineering Award from NCSEA and the 2010 Excellence in Engineering Award, Jurors' Favorite from SEAoI. Our speaker, Terry McDonnell is both a licensed structural engineer and certified by the SECB. The CEE Freshmen Committee (CFC) with help from SEA and CMAA, are hosting a Pre-Career Fair Networking event, on Thursday, February 24, from 7-8:30pm, in 165 Everitt. This event will include Company Representatives who will be present at the CEE Career Fair, February 25. The idea behind the event is to invite CEE students to meet and interact with Company Representatives before the Career Fair. Annoucements will be made in CEE classes next week on Feb. 21 & 22. A dress code will be enforced, so please read the attachment for all details and to register, free food and drink will be provided. We hope to see you there!

Jonathan Sladek, both an architect and licensed structural engineer with Halvorson & Partners, will be presenting his work on the design process of the Mansueto Library. Many unique challenges were encountered in this addition to the University of Chicago’s Regenstein Library which features a 120 ft by 240 ft clear span dome, an automated storage and retrieval system, and a 60 ft underground storage capacity of approximately 1 million cubic feet. Jonathan holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in architecture and structural engineering from U of I. Aqua was awarded the title the Emporis Skyscraper Award 2009 skyscraper of the year and is the tallest building in the world to have a woman be the lead architect, Jeanne Gang. Professor Larry A. Fahnestock holds a B.S. (Drexel University, 1996), M.S. (Lehigh University, 1998) and Ph.D. (Lehigh University, 2006), all in civil engineering, in addition to a B.S. (Drexel University, 1996) in architectural engineering. He has been on the faculty of the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois since 2006. From 1998 to 2000, Dr. Fahnestock worked as a structural engineer for Kling, an architectural and engineering firm located in Philadelphia, PA.
Dr. Fahnestock currently teaches courses in design and behavior of steel structures. He has research interests in earthquake engineering, innovative structural systems, steel structures, and experimental evaluation of large-scale structural components and systems.
Dr. Fahnestock is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, and the American Institute of Steel Construction. He is a licensed professional engineer in the state of California.

Caterpillar conducts a variety of work at the Simulation Center, including research, materials development, software engineering, and architecture & design.
